Client: Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services (OPRS)
Public Relations Strategic Workshop
 
Situation
The Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services (OPRS) is the largest not-for-profit provider of Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) in the state of Ohio. OPRS serves more than 5,817 residents on eleven campuses across Ohio and more than 75,000 older adults. OPRS retained Bascom & Adams to develop and facilitate a PR strategic thinking session for its newly created public relations department.
 
Solution
Bascom & Adams developed a visioning, strategic planning workshop , we discussed internal customer service improvement, community outreach, and performance management. In addition, we conducted a brainstorming session to help develop the outline for the department’s marketing plan.
 
Outcomes
The department developed a three-year marketing plan with short and long-term goals, objectives and action steps. By clarifying its role within the organization and identifying potential obstacles to change, the department successfully aligned its vision with the organization’s mission and values.
 

 
Client: Congressional Black Caucus Political Education and Leadership Institute
2003 CBC Democratic Presidential Detroit Debate
 
Situation
Detroit was chosen as one of six locations nationwide for Democratic Presidential Primary Debates in 2003-2004. The host organization, the Congressional Black Caucus Political Education and Leadership Institute (CBCLI), selected Berg Muirhead to ensure a seamless coordination of event logistics and to handle all media relations for the event, which was broadcast live from Detroit’s historic Fox Theatre by The Fox News Channel.
 
Solution 
Bascom & Adams, in support of our Michigan affiliate Berg Muirhead and Associates, worked with the CBCLI to develop the event theme, organize a large volunteer staff and set up spin and hospitality rooms and a media center. Our services also included vendor management, event ticketing services, liaison services between presidential candidates and the media, program book production, travel logistics, media credentialing and identifying sponsorship opportunities.
 
Outcomes
The 2003 Detroit Democratic Presidential Debate was hailed by the media as one of the best organized of the six debates. Berg Muirhead’s team was praised for our understanding of what journalists needed to do their jobs well. Attendees praised the excellence of the presentation and the attractive keepsake quality of the program book. Most importantly, it gave the people of Detroit something to be proud of and Michigan a chance to see how the political process works from their own backyard.
 
  

 
Client: Ethiopian North American Health Professionals Association
Helping Save Lives in Ethiopia
 
Situation
The Detroit-based Ethiopian North American Health Professionals Association (ENAHPA) had, through sheer strength of determination, funded nine successful medical mission trips to Ethiopia. In order to expand their efforts, they decided to host a fund-raising dinner to draw attention to their work and raise funds for future missions.
 
Solution
Bascom & Adams, in partnership with our Michigan affiliate Berg Muirhead, developed an aggressive, targeted communications plan aimed at reaching potential sponsors as well as local, regional, and national media. We also were able to capitalize on the involvement of Olympic gold medalist and holder of the world record in the marathon, Haile Gebrselassie. Gebrselassie, a native of Ethiopia, volunteered to attend the dinner, which was held the evening before the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon. We partnered with race organizers to include Gebrselassie in race activities.
 
Outcomes
In the words of ENAHPA founder Dr. Ingida Asfaw, “ENAHPA has become a household word.” The aggressive media strategies executed on ENAHPA’s behalf greatly enhanced the public’s knowledge of the organization and its mission. More importantly, all fund-raising goals were met.
